Frequently Asked Questions
When is your grant application deadline?
Our grant application deadline is March 1st of every year.
How often do you give out grants?
We give out grants on an annual basis, and given the timing of our application process we for the most part require that the funds be used in a single year. Having said that, occasionally support is provided for a two-year period if the Trustees feel the request justifies such support.
When are your grants awarded?
Decisions are made by the Board of Trustees in May of each year and grants are awarded shortly afterwards.
Where do I send my grant application?
We only accept grant applications through our website. Please do not mail your application to the Foundation’s PO Box as paper applications will not be reviewed or accepted.
What kind of programs does the Foundation support?
We are devoted to supporting programs related to improving the health and welfare of children in Baltimore City. More specifically, we support the following types of programs:
- Applied research programs in medical facilities, located in Baltimore City, directly benefiting the children of Baltimore City.
- Social and community programs in Baltimore City, or the surrounding areas, directly benefiting the children of Baltimore City.
- Education programs in Baltimore City or the surrounding areas, directly benefiting the children of Baltimore City.
What else do the Trustees look for when reviewing grant applications?
We are enthusiastic about programs that are innovative, change lives and have a direct and substantial impact on the lives of Baltimore City’s children. The total number of children affected by the program is also highly regarded.
Do you only support programs for the benefit of children?
Yes, the Foundation only funds programs for the benefit of the children and youth of Baltimore City. We define “youth” as individuals 18 years of age or younger.
I think our program would be a good fit for the kind of programs the Foundation supports but I am not sure. What should I do?
Reach out to us at info@thomaswilsonfoundation.org. We can discuss your program and try to help clarify if it falls into categories of what we normally support.
What is the average grant request amount?
The amount of our grant requests fall into a wide range, depending on the program’s reach, scope and requirements, all of which should be outlined in detail on your grant application. The typical request we receive tends to fall into the range of $2,500 to $10,000.
Are you a 501 (c) 3?
Yes, the Foundation is a non-profit charitable Maryland 501 (c) 3 corporation.
